This course is an advanced level qualification for professionals working in the sake industry and for sake enthusiasts.
It is designed to give a thorough understanding of the factors that account for the style and quality of sake as well as its commercial importance in the Japanese and export markets. The qualification will assist those who are required to make professional evaluations of sakes with regard to their quality and commercial value. The qualification provides the in-depth knowledge required to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in product selection on the retail and hospitality sectors.
Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal sake categories and give information concerning the key factors influencing style and quality. They will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of sakes in a variety of situations.
Who Should Attend
New entrants to the industry and/or sake enthusiasts
This qualification has a minimum requirement of 42.25 hours of study time, including 31 classroom hours with SHATEC and is conducted in-person.
Participant(s) must be at least 18 years old and above, i.e. legal drinking age in Singapore, to partake in any of the WSET Programmes.
Participant(s), for religious, health or any other reason(s), who do not wish to sample any alcohol during the course, may do so (only applicable for WSET Level 1 & 2 Programmes).
Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of 2 sakes.
This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.
Upon successful completion of the examination you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

Results will be issued based on the following timeline:
Level 2: 12 weeks from assessment date
SHATEC will inform participants of your results via email once we have received the Gradelist from WSET. Your certificates and lapel pin will come at a later date and you will be advised of the collection details once we have received it.
Re-sit of Exam
Please note that if you have not passed the exam, you will be required to attend a re-sit.
The exam re-sit fee is as follows:
Level 3 (Theory): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
Level 3 (Tasting): S$ 175.00 per sitting (incl. GST)
Level 3 (Both Theory and Tasting): S$ 300.00 (incl. GST)

- The main techniques that are used in the production of sake and how they influence style and quality
- The principal and specialty categories of sake
- The sake industry and the commercial importance of sake in the Japanese and export markets
- The principles behind the storage, selection and service of sake
- How to taste sake, and evaluate quality, identify and price, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Sake® (SAT)
