Successful hospitality leaders need to respond effectively to the need to adapt and change their organisations when opportunities present themselves and when the environment demands it. This drives leaders to establish goals that increase organisational focus on customer service, seek greater market share, and establish sustained profitable performance to name just a few examples. A typical approach to adaptation and improvement is to simply target problems and “fix” them. But with this approach often comes a command and control oriented hierarchy that, while providing some benefits of structure, may also inhibit information flow, stifle communication, and contribute to low commitment and low satisfaction within the workforce. Command and control bureaucracy is susceptible to mixed messages and incoherence that can breed cynicism, and lowered productivity.
The context of organisational change places exceptional emphasis on the quality of communication, the supportiveness of the work environment and broad involvement in change across the organisation. Neglect of key aspects of change and change leadership can easily cause change initiatives to fail or even backfire.

This workshop would be most effective for managerial operational staff, small business owners, independent operators, or even those possibly in franchising or management contracts.

|Dr. Keith Hunter
Professor of University of San Francisco
Dr. Hunter conducts research in Organizational Network Analysis, Organisational Culture, and Innovation Leadership. He is particularly interested in how social networks both influence and reflect the active mental models and power dynamics within organisations. Dr. Hunter’s investigations of the patterns of interaction among people and their implications for human behaviour and organisational outcomes are of critical significance to tomorrow’s business leaders.
Hunter pushes his students to link theory and practice and to develop excellence that is driven by a meaningful purpose. He strives to promote strong community engagement and the critical examination of USF’s mission of social justice in all of his courses. He models the way through his own volunteer work, advisement of student organisations, and facilitation of service-learning as a course instructor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
