8th International Tapas Competition, Valladolid, Champion – Nayab Sidiqui

We share with immense pride, news we received from Valladolid, Spain, that our SHATEC graduate, Nayab Sidiqui had clinched the Championship title in the 8th International Tapas Competition with her brilliant creation, Miniature Torto!

Nayab was the one and only Singapore representative selected by ICEX, Spain among 12 other finalists shortlisted worldwide this year. As part of her training, Nayab had to pass exams for both Spanish language and food theory on Spanish gastronomy. She also served internship at the 2 Michelin star restarant Casa Marcial and worked at another restaurant by the same chef of Casa Marcial, Chef Nacho Manzona. During her time with Chef Nacho, she was able to impress the award winning chef and even introduced Asian/Indian touches to his restaurant menu.

This is the third year running which saw a SHATEC trainee representing Singapore in the prestigious Training Programme in Spanish Gastronomy and the second consecutive year our student has brought home the championship title. Our previous years’ representatives, Samuel Quan (5th place, 2014) and Teo Jun Xiang (Champion, 2015) left such deep impressions of their prowess during their stints in Spain that SHATEC has become a well-known name. The organisers had very high regards for SHATEC and consequently, higher expectations of our representative, Nayab,  this year. Similar to previous years too, many other candidates were seasoned and well experienced, having worked at 1-3 Michelin stars restaurants prior to the programme. Even though competition was stiff, the formidable SHATEC Spark saw Nayab applying herself wholeheartedly to her training, taking challenges in stride. Her absolute positive spirit eventually led her to sweet success.

Samuel, Jun Xiang and Nayab are the very embodiments of the SHATEC Edge: Contemporary, Competent, Confident, Connected. Their achievements are testaments to SHATEC’s continual success in nurturing hospitality talents for the industry; a true measure of our commitment towards providing quality education and opportunities to all students; a reflection of Team SHATEC’s ceaseless efforts in supporting, guiding and grooming our students into winners and future leaders.

Please join us as we rejoice and celebrate our success stories and may there be many, many more to come!
